About

Hello Folks! My name is Megan and I am the writer/photographer/designer for Say It’s Not Soy. I currently live in Northern California and work as a web developer/UI designer. I started this blog to dispel the myth that being vegan means living off of rabbit food. If you have read through my blog, you can see that being vegan doesn’t mean you have to live off of boring food.
When I’m not whipping up yummy food in my kitchen, you can find me skating with and/or coaching my local roller derby team (the Silicon Valley Roller Girls). I also enjoy reading comics, building cool things out of Lego, and going to the skate park. I absolutely love donuts and I am always on the hunt for good vegan ones. Here is more information about myself and the blog:
What does it mean to be vegan?
Veganism is a diet and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. Many people decide to go vegan for ethical, nutritional, or environmental reasons. Wikipedia has a great veganism page that goes into more details.
Why is the blog called “Say It’s Not Soy”?
“Say It’s Not Soy” is basically a nod to all the people that I have encountered that say “this is vegan, I would never have guessed” or “how can this be vegan, don’t you have to use eggs/milk/butter” after they have tried my food. Some people don’t like vegan food because they equate it all as bland, dry, and just all around nasty. I’m with those people; I would hate vegan food if it was all bland, dry, and nasty. The truth is that vegan food can be incredibly delicious and you probably won’t even notice the absence of animal products.
How did you become vegan?
Like most vegans; I was first vegetarian before becoming vegan. When I was 11 my mom let me help her prepare the Thanksgiving turkey; that experience was the deal breaker for my omnivore days. I became a vegetarian shortly after that experience and never looked back. Over the next few years I did research on animal rights and the meat/dairy industry. After educating myself to the truth behind how animal products go from the farm to my plate; I decided to jump into veganism. Back then being vegan wasn’t as easy as it is today (Garden Burgers were just starting to get popular) and it was quite the learning experience. Now days being vegan has never been easier or more delicious (just read through my blog).
How do you come up with your recipes?
Trial/Error and lots of experimenting. I also read a ton of non-vegan blogs to get ideas for recipes to try and veganize.
What type of camera do you use?
I use a Canon PowerShot SD600 point and shoot camera for all of my pictures. I also use Photoshop to give my pictures their rounded edges.
